Academic Summer Courses Age 12-17

These 10-day courses are designed to provide that all important boost for international students before joining a GCSE, A Level or IB (International Baccalaureate) Diploma programme in the UK.

There are 2 groups :  GCSE (ages 14-15) and A Level, IB Diploma and Foundation (ages 16-17)

For many international students, particularly for those whose proficiency in English is not as high as might be desired, it can be a very daunting task stepping into a British independent boarding school for the first time.  Without the necessary linguistic skills and cultural awareness, getting off to a flying start can be extremely challenging.

By attending one of our pre-sessional courses, not only are students able to improve their proficiency in English, but they are also able to develop key academic skills which will equip them well for their onward educational journey.

*Pre-Sessional+ course is an additional 5 days starting from 18th August - 1st September and costs £2,350

Pre-sessional courses run for 10 days, in maximum class sizes of 12, with three hours of intensive academic English each morning, followed by two hours of other academic preparation, including lessons, lectures and workshops focusing on the following areas:

                Acquiring, recording and learning new vocabulary

                Increasing effectiveness in listening skills

                Improving academic writing skills (including extended essay writing support)

                Developing reading techniques, such as skimming and scanning

                Effective pronunciation, enunciation and debating

                Understanding the meta language of examination papers

                Broadening study skills and getting the most out of your revision

                Wellbeing and dealing with examination stress

                Answering examination questions in full

Students are also expected to complete set assignments during the evenings in order to maximise the effectiveness of these courses.

Upon completion of one of our pre-sessional courses, students are far more focused, prepared and able to cope with the demands of the GCSE, A Level or IB programme they will move on to, enabling them to hit the ground running and providing them with the necessary academic skills to make the most of their education in the UK.

There is an Extended Pre-Sessional Course which is another 5 days which bridges the gap between the end of the 10 day Pre-Sessional Course and the start of term

Bede's Summer School Lancing is based in West Sussex, east of Worthing and west of Brighton. It is just five minutes from Shoreham airport and has stunning views from the campus of the coast and South Downs.

Architecturally similar in style to Oxford and Cambridge universities, Lancing’s magnificent Gothic buildings include a spectacular grand dining room and an impressive chapel, which is listed as a Building of National Importance. Our English lessons consist of English Skills, Enrichment and Research Projects. These combine to provide students with a balanced programme of language and academic content. In addition, Students can create a more intensive study programme by choosing up to two Academic Academies per week in subjects such as Critical Thinking, Essay Writing, International Relations, Management or Presenting.

The Future Psychologist summer programme has been developed by experts within the field to offer students a fully immersive experience of working as a professional
psychologist. This experience offers the opportunity to delve into health, forensic, clinical, and sport psychology. You will participate in interactive seminars and
workshops, designed to inspire curiosity, critical thinking, and reflection. These sessions will include guest speakers, real life case studies, role plays and hands-on research experience. They will offer a taster of psychological techniques including mindfulness, cognitive behavioural therapy, and motivational interviewing.

You will gain further insight into the practical application of psychology through visits to the Royal Courts of Justice and Royal London Hospital research departments. You will find out more about studying psychology at university level, and how to get started in developing your experience, on your career pathway to success.

The academic tutors are the very best. With many of them currently teaching or having previously taught and studied at the University of Oxford and/or Cambridge, they are at the forefront of the latest discoveries and cutting-edge research, constantly producing new syllabi to inspire students. I

Class sizes are small, with no more than 8 students in each seminar. For students aged 16 and over,  2:1 tutorials are offered which gives an opportunity the the student, the classmage and the tutor  to enter a detailed discussion and develop critical thinking skills.

Upon completiion of the course, a letter of recommendation from your tutor is issued which can be used towards univerity, job and internship applications.

The Future Engineer summer programme, available residentially and online, is an interactive experience that gives students a fully immersive insight into the life of a professional working in the engineering industry.

space. The programme will also include an industrial visit to an engineering company and learning about the daily life of an engineer.

This academic English language and study skills course aims to prepare you linguistically and culturally for your future studies in an English
speaking school, college or university. You will learn how to study effectively and become an independent learner. The two-week course consists of 41 hours of classes, 6 hours of supervised selfstudyand tutorials, and study tours to furtherenhance academic and cultural knowledge.

There will still be time to develop English and cultural skills with focus activities and relax during arange of fun evening events.

The Senior Academic course is aimed at all those aspiring and motivated students who want to be challenged and have a deeper learning experience.

Each week students receive 12.5 hours of formal English lessons plus 10 hours of tuition in a course of their choice.   They either study Core English or Advanced English depending on ability.  Core English iis for students of levels A1-B2.  Lesson focus on the 4 key skills of Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening as well as vocabulary and grammar.   The Advanced English classes are perfect for students who are already proficient in English at levels C1-C2.  They will study literature, public speaking, creative writing and avanced aural skills.

In the evenings, students enjoy a full and varied recreational timetable with sports and activities to complement their learning. Excursions are seen as an integral part of the Summer School programme and are included at weekends. Our trips are designed to extend the classroom curriculum and to provide exciting and enriching cultural experiences.

This course is suitable for international students who come to the UK to study in Year 9 or Year 10.

Students will spend 7.5 hours a week studying English, and will also have lessons in Maths, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, History, Geography, Business, Drama and Art developing their English and study skills. 

There is also a special lesson for Boarding Preparation.  It will give students a great start to their studies at their next school.  Our maximum class size is 16, but in recent years the average class size has been 10 to 12 students.

The Future Doctor summer programme is an interactive experience that gives students a fully immersive insight into the life of a professional working in medicine. You will explore a broad range of concepts including physiology and clinical medicine. With a focus on the gastrointestinal, respiratory, cardiovascular and neurological systems, you will explore how the body is meant to be working and what can go wrong.

As well as exploring cutting-edge techniques, there will be valuable insights into the worlds of surgery and medical ethics. Students will also be given the opportunity to
work alongside medical professionals in state-of-the-art medical school facilities in a hospital simulation. With a maximum class size of 15 students, this two-week programme offers a really exciting opportunity for girls and boys, aged 13 – 17, who are interested in modern science and technology.

Three hours of English lessons take place each day, designed to develop students’ proficiency in all four skills areas of the English language: reading, writing, listening and speaking are all afforded appropriate teaching and learning time, along with vocabulary and pronunciation development.

Complementing the English lessons, students have two hours each day of highly practical and hands on tuition in Science, Technology & Engineering. During their studies, students will investigate, experiment, design and even construct a product, thus following a process from an initial idea to its final completion. For example, they may design and build an app, develop a programme, design a product or explore robotics.

Students are able to use the fantastic facilities at Taunton School to support their learning, including a state of the art IT suite, large and well-equipped science labs and outstanding DT workshops with laser cutters and 3D printers.

St Edward’s School is a co-educational day and boarding school, 15 minutes from the centre of Oxford.
