These 10-day courses are designed to provide that all important boost for international students before joining a GCSE, A Level or IB (International Baccalaureate) Diploma programme in the UK.
There are 2 groups : GCSE (ages 14-15) and A Level, IB Diploma and Foundation (ages 16-17)
For many international students, particularly for those whose proficiency in English is not as high as might be desired, it can be a very daunting task stepping into a British independent boarding school for the first time. Without the necessary linguistic skills and cultural awareness, getting off to a flying start can be extremely challenging.
By attending one of our pre-sessional courses, not only are students able to improve their proficiency in English, but they are also able to develop key academic skills which will equip them well for their onward educational journey.

Pre-sessional courses run for 10 days, in maximum class sizes of 12, with three hours of intensive academic English each morning, followed by two hours of other academic preparation, including lessons, lectures and workshops focusing on the following areas:
Acquiring, recording and learning new vocabulary
Increasing effectiveness in listening skills
Improving academic writing skills (including extended essay writing support)
Developing reading techniques, such as skimming and scanning
Effective pronunciation, enunciation and debating
Understanding the meta language of examination papers
Broadening study skills and getting the most out of your revision
Wellbeing and dealing with examination stress
Answering examination questions in full
Students are also expected to complete set assignments during the evenings in order to maximise the effectiveness of these courses.
Upon completion of one of our pre-sessional courses, students are far more focused, prepared and able to cope with the demands of the GCSE, A Level or IB programme they will move on to, enabling them to hit the ground running and providing them with the necessary academic skills to make the most of their education in the UK.
There is an Extended Pre-Sessional Course which is another 5 days which bridges the gap between the end of the 10 day Pre-Sessional Course and the start of term

The Senior Academic course is aimed at all those aspiring and motivated students who want to be challenged and have a deeper learning experience.

This course is suitable for international students who come to the UK to study in Year 9 or Year 10.
Students will spend 7.5 hours a week studying English, and will also have lessons in Maths, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, History, Geography, Business, Drama and Art developing their English and study skills.
There is also a special lesson for Boarding Preparation. It will give students a great start to their studies at their next school. Our maximum class size is 16, but in recent years the average class size has been 10 to 12 students.

The Future Doctor summer programme is an interactive experience that gives students a fully immersive insight into the life of a professional working in medicine. You will explore a broad range of concepts including physiology and clinical medicine. With a focus on the gastrointestinal, respiratory, cardiovascular and neurological systems, you will explore how the body is meant to be working and what can go wrong.
As well as exploring cutting-edge techniques, there will be valuable insights into the worlds of surgery and medical ethics. Students will also be given the opportunity to
work alongside medical professionals in state-of-the-art medical school facilities in a hospital simulation. Using the knowledge developed over the course of programme, students will then work as part of a dynamic team to create a medical solution for a business that will be pitched to a panel of medical professionals.

With a maximum class size of 15 students, this two-week programme offers a really exciting opportunity for girls and boys, aged 13 – 17, who are interested in modern science and technology.
Three hours of English lessons take place each day, designed to develop students’ proficiency in all four skills areas of the English language: reading, writing, listening and speaking are all afforded appropriate teaching and learning time, along with vocabulary and pronunciation development.
Complementing the English lessons, students have two hours each day of highly practical and hands on tuition in Science, Technology & Engineering. During their studies, students will investigate, experiment, design and even construct a product, thus following a process from an initial idea to its final completion. For example, they may design and build an app, develop a programme, design a product or explore robotics.
Students are able to use the fantastic facilities at Taunton School to support their learning, including a state of the art IT suite, large and well-equipped science labs and outstanding DT workshops with laser cutters and 3D printers.
