These 10-day courses costing £2100 are designed to provide that all important boost for international students before joining a GCSE, A Level or IB (International Baccalaureate) Diploma programme in the UK.
There are 2 groups : GCSE (ages 14-15) and A Level, IB Diploma and Foundation (ages 16-17)
For many international students, particularly for those whose proficiency in English is not as high as might be desired, it can be a very daunting task stepping into a British independent boarding school for the first time. Without the necessary linguistic skills and cultural awareness, getting off to a flying start can be extremely challenging.
By attending one of the pre-sessional courses, not only are students able to improve their proficiency in English, but they are also able to develop key academic skills which will equip them well for their onward educational journey.
Pre-sessional courses run for 10 days, in maximum class sizes of 12, with three hours of intensive academic English each morning, followed by two hours of other academic preparation, including lessons, lectures and workshops focusing on the following areas:
Acquiring, recording and learning new vocabulary
Increasing effectiveness in listening skills
Improving academic writing skills (including extended essay writing support)
Developing reading techniques, such as skimming and scanning
Effective pronunciation, enunciation and debating
Understanding the meta language of examination papers

Students are also expected to complete set assignments during the evenings in order to maximise the effectiveness of these courses.
Upon completion of one of our pre-sessional courses, students are far more focused, prepared and able to cope with the demands of the GCSE, A Level or IB programme they will move on to, enabling them to hit the ground running and providing them with the necessary academic skills to make the most of their education in the UK.
There is an Extended Pre-Sessional Course which is another 5 days which bridges the gap between the end of the 10 day Pre-Sessional Course and the start of term.(2,100).

Pathways To Higher Education is an intensive programme with 25 hours of study per week, specially designed for young adults who are preparing for future academic study or for the start of their professional life. The course takes place at the University of Sussex, the only university campus in England that is surrounded by a National Park. Although located in the countryside, the University is just 10 minutes away by train from the cosmopolitan city of Brighton. This University campus, with many modern buildings and its award-winning architecture, can be described as a self-contained village, ideal for the 16-20 age group.
The transition to higher education is a significant moment in a young person’s personal, social and academic development. Pathways to Higher Education course is designed to ease that transition for those students looking to attend university in an English-speaking environment. Lessons consist of Academic English, Skills for Higher Education and Academic Pathways. These combine to form an academic programme themed by specific subject areas, whereby students learn both the language and content required to engage fully in academic study in their preferred field.

Lessons take place in the mornings and afternoons and there is a full programme of evening social events and weekend excursions designed in consultation with the students and tailored to their age and interests. There is a minimum number of Social Events and Excursions that students are required to attend depending on their age. All recreational activities organised by Bede's are included in the course fee.

Bede's Summer School Lancing is based in West Sussex, east of Worthing and west of Brighton. It is just five minutes from Shoreham airport and has stunning views from the campus of the coast and South Downs.
Architecturally similar in style to Oxford and Cambridge universities, Lancing’s magnificent Gothic buildings include a spectacular grand dining room and an impressive chapel, which is listed as a Building of National Importance. The site’s hilltop location on the South Downs has views of the seaside town of Brighton and is just five minutes from Shoreham Airport, where students can learn to fly.
Our English lessons consist of English Skills, Enrichment and Research Projects. These combine to provide students with a balanced programme of language and academic content. In addition, Students can create a more intensive study programme by choosing up to two Academic Academies per week in subjects such as Critical Thinking, Essay Writing, International Relations, Management or Presenting.
This fully-inclusive programme also features sports (golf, horse-riding, tennis and watersports) and activities every afternoon. Professional academies are available in a variety of sports and other activities - such as:

Sustainability is, without a doubt, the key challenge facing today’s world; it will be a primary concern for the next generation of leaders, thinkers, lawyers, architects and entrepreneurs. This course will gather the ambitious young people who will take on those roles and give them the tools they need to come up with solutions to the issues that the societies of tomorrow will face.
Making use of Benenden’s enquiry-based model, the course offers a project-driven learning experience in which students will be given the tools and opportunity to pursue their own interests and showcase their talents.
Problem-solving sessions, group discussions, creative workshops, lectures, debates and independent study sessions throughout the two weeks will supply students with the skills, ideas and knowledge they need to complete an individual and a group project.
The course will make the most of Benenden’s unique position in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty at the heart of the Wealden Kent countryside. Workshops will take place both on site and off site, with visits to nearby locations such as the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve and Bedgebury Pinetum.
On-site workshops will take full advantage of Benenden’s 250 acres of stunning Wealden landscape and existing sustainability projects, which include a vegetable garden, bee hives, eco classroom, wildlife cameras and a recently revived orchard.
Students will engage in a full programme of social and sporting activities to complement and provide down-time from their academic pursuits. Our on-site facilities, to which students will have access, include a swimming pool, tennis courts, playing fields and sports hall.
There will also be three full-day excursions. These will, provisionally, be to Brighton, Oxford and Thorpe Park.

The Future Doctor Summer Programme is an interactive experience that gives students a fully immersive insight into the life of a professional working in medicine.
Over the course of the week, students will explore a broad range of concepts including physiology and clinical medicine. With a focus on the gastrointestinal, respiratory, cardiovascular and neurological systems, they will explore how the body is meant to be working and what can go wrong.
The programme also features a crash course in developing a competitive medical school application.

Drawing on Sedbergh’s wealth of experience teaching leaders of the future, LIRA is an innovative educational experience for older pupils (14-16) to develop and refine teamwork, leadership and communication skills. Thought provoking, fully interactive and taught in conjunction with a team of subject matter experts, this transformative, 2-week personal development programme combines personal coaching, experiential learning and fun excursions to support pupils as they develop the necessary skills to become effective leaders of the future.
Run by a team of subject matter experts more usually found within the corporate environment, programme content is delivered using in-person priming sessions followed by individual and group exercises, all of which focus and relate back to the four themes of leading; caring; connecting and exploring. Week one focuses on leadership skills acquisition which are then put into practice over the weekend in a ‘real- life’ simulation experience.

This course is suitable for international students who come to the UK to study in Year 9 or Year 10.
Students will spend 7.5 hours a week studying English, and will also have lessons in Maths, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, History, Geography, Business, Drama and Art developing their English and study skills.

The Oswestry Summer school offers pupils full immersion into British Independent School life.
