About This Course

The Veterinary Medicine, Zoology & Animal Sciences Summer Programme is a two-week immersive course designed for motivated students aged 15–18 who are considering future study or careers in veterinary science, zoology, biology, animal science, or related fields. Set within the inspiring environment of Abbotsholme School, this programme offers a unique blend of academic learning, practical investigation, and hands-on animal experience.

Students gain a strong foundation in key scientific areas, exploring topics such as animal anatomy and physiology, disease and diagnostics, animal welfare and ethics, conservation science, and species management. Classroom-based teaching is complemented by laboratory sessions, where students develop essential scientific skills through dissections, microscopic analysis, data collection, and structured inquiry. These sessions are led by experienced teachers and specialists who guide students in applying theory to real-world scenarios.

A defining feature of the programme is the daily hands-on experience on Abbotsholme’s fully working farm. Here, students gain an authentic insight into animal husbandry and care, including health checks, behaviour observation, feeding regimes, and welfare management across a range of species. This practical exposure allows students to better understand the responsibilities, challenges, and rewards of working with animals in professional settings.

To support students’ longer-term ambitions, the programme includes dedicated university and career guidance. Students receive clear insight into veterinary and bioscience degree pathways, admissions expectations, and competitive application processes. Sessions cover personal statements, interview preparation, and career planning, helping students make informed decisions about their next steps. In addition, networking opportunities with animal professionals—including vets, zoologists, animal rehabilitators, behaviourists, and conservation practitioners—provide valuable real-world perspectives and inspiration.

The learning experience is further enriched by two major excursions. Students visit an animal rehabilitation centre, where they learn about rescue, treatment, and release practices, and take part in a trip to a zoo or wildlife park to explore conservation strategies, breeding programmes, and species management in action.

Overall, this summer programme offers a challenging, engaging, and rewarding experience that builds academic confidence, strengthens university aspirations, and deepens students’ understanding of the animal world. It also brings together like-minded students who share a passion for science, animals, and conservation, creating a stimulating and supportive learning community.
